Xanthine oxidase (XO), a multifunctional molybdoflavoprotein, catalyzes the oxidative hydroxylation of purine substrates (hypoxanthine and xanthine) to produce uric acid and then the subsequent reduction of oxygen at the flavin center with the production of reactive oxygen species, either superoxide anion radicals or hydrogen peroxide.
The purine catabolism pathway's key enzyme, xanthine oxidase, has been linked indirectly to a number of pathological conditions, including cancer, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome, as well as directly to the pathogenesis of gout. Gout, cancer, inflammation, and oxidative damage may all be treated therapeutically by selectively inhibiting xanthine oxidase.
