Hepatitis B virus, also known as HBV or Orthohepadnavirus, is a type of virus that belongs to the Hepadnaviridae family of viruses. Hepatitis B is brought on by the virus HBV. The ground squirrel hepatitis virus, the woodchuck hepatitis virus, and the woolly monkey hepatitis B virus are the other three species that make up the Orthohepadnavirus, of which the hepatitis B virus is the type species. The Hepadnaviridae family includes the genus as a member. Based on antigenic epitopes found on its envelope proteins, HBV is classified into four major serotypes (adr, adw, ayr, ayw), and eight genotypes (A-H) based on the genome's overall nucleotide sequence variation. The genotypes are used to track the evolution and spread of the virus because they have a distinct geographic distribution. The severity of the disease, the progression and propensity for complications, the response to treatment, and perhaps vaccination, are all impacted by genotype differences.
