Liposomes (NPs typically 100–500 nm in diameter) are fabricated from the self-assembly of phospholipids, which consist of a polar phosphate head group and hydrophobic lipid tails. The hydrophobic tails self-orient in aqueous environments, forming a spherical structure with an aqueous core and a lipophilic bilayer membrane surrounding it. Liposomes can be made to be both biocompatible and biodegradable (for instance, at a particular pH and temperature) by changing the lipid composition. Additionally, there are a number of modifications that can be made to liposomes to increase their effectiveness as drug delivery vehicles.
