Integral membrane proteins called serotonin transporters (SERTs) move serotonin from synaptic spaces into presynaptic neurons. Serotonin's function is effectively terminated and neuronal transmission is stopped by SERTs, which reabsorb it in the synaptic cleft. Reuptake of serotonin is essential for avoiding nerve overstimulation.
By delivering 5-hydroxytryptamine (5HT) to neurons and glial cells, the serotonin transporter (SERT) controls the extracellular levels of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5HT) in the brain. Drugs used to treat emotional disorders, such as depression, primarily target the human SERT (hSERT). The bacterial leucine transporter (LeuT), for which a high resolution crystal structure is now available, is a member of the solute carrier 6 family, which also includes hSERT.
