Glycoside hydrolase enzymes are glucosidases. A glucosidase that works on α(1→4) bonds is called α-glucosidase, and it is found in the small intestine's brush border. α-Glucosidase inhibitors are a new class of diabetes medications. It can effectively control blood sugar levels and prevent diabetic complications by lowering the postprandial blood sugar concentration.
In β-D-glucosides and oligosaccharides, β-glucosidase catalyzes the hydrolysis of the glycosidic bonds to terminal non-reducing residues, releasing glucose in the process. Because of its crucial function in the breakdown of cellulose, the transformation of glycosides, and numerous other industrial processes, β-glucosidase has garnered a great deal of interest from the scientific community. In order to degrade cellulose, β-glucosidases are crucial because they catalyze the last stage of cellulose hydrolysis.
